So lately I’ve had insomnia…

And during these bouts of insomnia, all I can think to do is make WEBSITE DESIGNS!!! YAYY!!! Yea…so here are the ones I’ve done within the past week or so…I hope you enjoy them! Click them to enlarge!

I guess I understand now…

…what my professor meant when he said I’d want to rip my hair out during this independent study. Of course, I do that during any sort of web design, but it’s very difficult to figure out the problem in something you don’t really understand yet. Okay, so I’m doing this tutorial, right? And I enter all the ActionScript in correctly, right? I even have the finished product open that the tutorial-maker included. The script is exactly the same, but on mine it produces an error. Makes me want to shoot myself. Well, blogging about my problems won’t change them, so it’s back to Flash I go!

20 minutes later

Well, the problem was that the tutorial I was doing was based in ActionScript 2, which is outdated by ActionScript3. So much of the code that I put in just wasn’t gonna fly. Of course, they couldn’t tell me this at the beginning of the tutorial so that I wouldn’t waste my time. But you know, whatever. Whatever! I’ll find a tutorial that will show me some real loving… :(

At the end of the night…

…there are sometimes rewards! Like a finished project!!! I’m pleased to present you with my first attempt at implementing flash into a website. Tell me what you think! There’s also a list of some tutorials that I’m hoping to get to sometime soon. I may not do them all (there’s just too many), but I’ll be getting ideas from them!

A Work In Progress

So the next thing on my to-do list is figuring out how to put HTML inside flash, now that I know how to put flash inside HTML!

A Work In Progress

So in an effort to record and hopefully reaffirm the things I am learning throughout my independent study, I have decided to start writing about what I’m doing at all times. Constantly, I’m sitting here making revelations to myself and I’m like…well, I’ve already updated my facebook status 14 times today, so I probably shouldn’t post THAT too. Well, here is a way to spare you guys the pain of my spammy comments. Unless you WANT to read them, of course. Anyways, so first let me fill you in on what I’ve done so far today.

I started by going through my tutorial lists, looking for something that could possibly be applicable to my struggles. I went through a few simple tutorials, such as masks and image slideshows, but I think I’m probably ahead of those kinds of things. What I needed now was things that I could apply to a later project (aka hollytitus.com!). I’m not really sure how I got sidetracked, but I decided to make a mini-site that I would eventually upload all of my finished tutorials to. Why would this be great? Because then my professor has an organized portfolio of what I’m doing! How awesome is that? So after a bit of fiddling around with some simple stuff on Photoshop, I spliced the image, and went to Dreamweaver. I stopped, sighing. If it’s one thing I’ve learned in the past two weeks, it is that I’ve been doing everything wrong. WRONG. Real website designers apparently use CSS to create the layout of their website. So now, instead of researching Flash, I’ve found myself HERE:

It seems I’ve gotten extremely sidetracked…but hey! This is something I wanted to do ANYWAYS. It just seems like there is SO MUCH that I want and NEED to learn that I try to do it all at the same time. It just doesn’t work, though. Another thing I discovered today is the wonders of the SLICE TOOL!

Yea, I used to cut up my layout by hand. A very shoot-me-please process. I had a great method down, but now I have an even better one. I’ll never put down my slice tool.

So an other thing I figured out was that Fireworks is really the web designer program. Well, crap, if I had known that, I would have done an independent study on THAT, seeing as how I’ve NEVER USED IT. Now because of that, I got to test out my computer with FOUR Adobe programs open. This baby isn’t even struggling. My darling computer…anyways, it’s time to get back to work. I’ll let you know how the awesome portfolio website comes out!

Everything I Know Is Wrong

Okay…maybe not everything. For the past couple of hours, I’ve been swimming around in nettuts.com. I’m feeling sort of overwhelmed by the fact that there is SO MUCH that I want to learn, and just not enough time to devote to it. What is PHP anyways? How can I create a more awesome Word Press blog? What do I need to know about Javascript? Joomla! MySQL! Ruby on Rails! It never ends!!! Not to mention, I’m SUPPOSED to be researching Flash right now. How can I focus on just one thing, though, when there is so much I want to know? If I’m ever going to be a respectable, desirable web designer, these are all things I need to research. The sucky part is that NONE OF THIS is taught at school.

I read an article that discussed whether or not is was worth it to go to school for web design or not. Most people did find they gathered some useful experiences from school, but almost none of it was educational. Social, yes. Maturing, yes. Useful, maybe not. Now, I’m not saying that I haven’t had a good time at school (for the most part), but it is very discouarging to realize that like 90% of what I need to know is stuff I need to learn on my own. Learning on your own is all fine and good, but what do you do when you don’t have the time? What do you do when your Web Design favorites folder is overflowing with tutorials and articles? How do you pick? Very frustrating…

More Artwork!!

That’s right, everyone. The semester is over, and I’ve collected all of my work from my classes. So that means…more artwork! Here it is!

This was my figure drawing final. I thought it turned out pretty well! I wish I had time to finish the far left pose, but alas…I did not.

This was my first oil painting. The concept has to do with people treasuring sinful stuff, which I represented as the seven deadly sins. They are overshadowing and covering up the bible, or God.

My second oil painting had to do with distance. Not too bad..

My third silkscreen. It was supposed to have lines, but some last minute errors made me unable to do them.

My second litho. My professor actually took one of my edition to add to the USAO collection, so I’m way excited about that.

Completion Feels Good

Well, the semester is wrapping up, FINALLY. The only thing left on my list of things to do is to do my art history final, which is simply answering how Renaissance and Medeival Art has affected me and my art. Easy enough, right? Yea…

So some of you may be wondering just what I’ve been working on for this entire semester. Here are a few snapshots of what I’ve done. I’ll post more later!

Here is one of my projects from Ceramic Handbuilding. This was done with the pinch process. I call it my coin pot, and that is what it’s for…coin storage!

This was for my coil project. The concept had to be love-related. I call this, “Lover’s Embrace.” I’m pretty proud of this sucker.

This was my self-portrait in oil painting. It’s not perfect, but I don’t think I did too bad. I want to re-do my clothes one day. Plus, apparently my body is misshapen and can’t actually sit that way…

We had to do three alla primas (done in one sitting) near the end of the semester in oil painting, and this was the most successful one. Mostly I just decided to enjoy myself and paint the bottle how I wanted to, and it seemed to work.

This was my final for oil painting. My model was Sarah Castor, one of my beloved roommates. The piece is supposed to convey a sense of peace and contentment.

This was my first silkscreen in printmaking. Cupid baby doesn’t really know what’s going on.

My second silkscreen in printmaking. Who rides in a sleigh, anymore, anyways? I decided to pimp Santa’s ride.

So, I really liked the pose for this figure drawing piece. Her left breast ended up being somehow ginormous compared to her right breast, but that’s okay. I like it anyways.

I really like to draw profiles, so naturally I enjoyed this one. Too bad it’s on newsprint..

I like this one too, even if it’s a bit sketchy. Another one with ginormous left breast syndrome, though.

Here are a few of my final projects that I did for my computer graphics class. Click the thumbnail to get the full size picture!

I also have Sarah’s website almost completely finished! All that’s left is the gallery. Check it out by clicking on the image below!

Hope you guys have enjoyed this snippet of my semester’s work! I’ll have a few more to share tomorrow!

Final Projects

Art 1 Comment

So, I’m super excited about my final projects for my computer graphics class. I got the OK from my professor that I could do websites for them instead of just a random graphic or whatever. I made one really cool website last night that I want to share with you guys, though! Here is a sneak peak!

It’s a smaller version, but it gives you an idea of what’s to come! I’ll probably do about two or three more for my website, just to kind of brainstorm about what I want for my main website. I’m also going to be designing my awesome roommate’s new website, SAEPHOTOGRAPHY.NET!! I’m so excited for her, and this is technically my first job as a web designer doing something for someone other than myself! I’m definitely going to go all out for her!

Once I get a bunch of websites that might make the cut, I’m going to use them in my independent study in Adobe Flash to make an awesome FLASH website. Let’s hope that I can figure out how to do some really cool effects.

I don’t know if there’s anything else that needs to be said. This is what I spent $30 at our convenient store on…and I still have over $50 left to spend!

And while I’m here, I’d like to announce that my computer is officially up and runnin’! Here is a picture of the new shiny addition to the family:

Home at last…

It’s End-of-the-Semester Scramble Time!

Art, Daily Living 1 Comment

That’s right. The countdown is on! Three and a half weeks remain in this semester. Let’s have a quick run-down of what all I have to do, just for school:

2 silkscreen editions
2 litho editions
Touch up all oil paintings
Final oil painting project: a portrait of Sarah
Ceramic handbuilding soft slab and hard slab projects
Glaze all ceramic projects
1-2 take-home Art History tests

I think that’s it…busy, busy, busy! And unfortunately, my motivation is nowhere to be found. It’s gotta be hiding in this room somewhere…

I also enrolled for my summer and fall semesters today. I’m super excited about my summer semester and independent study, too! I’ll be taking Photo 1 and Watercolor 1, along with an independent study focused on FLASH WEB DESIGN! My big project for that will be finally finishing my web site. I’ll also have two smaller projects that go off of any tutorial I want. So for five weeks, I’ll be required to work on Flash, Photoshop, and my website for five hours a day…I dunno, guys, that doesn’t sound like much fun. Let’s be real, here. Who wants to make WEB SITES for a living? Oh…that’s me! Talk about torture… :)

In the fall semester I’ll be taking 19th century Art History, Sculpture 1, Graphic Design 1 (YAY), Digital Photography, and World Thought! I’ll  have 20 minute lunches, but hey…Sarah and I somehow managed to take all of the same classes, so we will suffer together. Or something…

In other news, I now have my father’s old iPhone, so I’m connected to the world once again. Unfortunately, my computer is STILL MIA because the tech that was supposed to put it together got into a car accident. While I feel sorry for him and bid him a quick recovery, I still am computer-less. That’s no less than agonizing for the computer junkie inside of me. So if anyone knows of someone who can take charge and put my computer together, I’d love them forever! Until then, I’ll just have to continue over-heating my laptop by leaving it on all the time.
